Families on housing waiting list rejecting Holyland, meeting told

FILLING social housing in the Holyland area of South Belfast is proving problematic – thanks to party-loving students. Though private landlords own the majority of properties in the area, some are owned by the Housing Executive and Trinity Housing and are used for social housing.

Finaghy loyalist flags are flying again

THE erection of flags by loyalists at Finaghy has been slammed by both politicians and traders, who said the former flashpoint should remain a “neutral” area. Traders and residents awoke last week to find loyalist flags erected at the crossroads and along Finaghy Road South leading to the Malone Road.

Olga (80) speaks of home raid terror

A SOUTH Belfast pensioner who lost thousands of pounds in a burglary at her home has warned her neighbours to stay alert otherwise they could become victims too. The Benmore Walk flat of 84-year old Olga Montgomery was targeted in the early hours of last Wednesday morning, with a total of £7,000 cash and “irreplaceable” family jewellery stolen by the heartless thieves.

Thanking Brian

THE pre-eminent Irish American artist Brian O’Doherty – AKA the late Patrick Ireland – came along to the New York-New Belfast conference last week to cheer on his old pal Robert Ballagh, who made a powerful call for votes for the diaspora.
Following the slaughter on Bloody Sunday in Derry in 1972, Brian O’Doherty started to sign all his artwork with the name Patrick Ireland. His artistic protest drew the attention – and sympathy – of the American art world to the plight of Northern nationalists, but also ensured the New York painter got the cold shoulder from official Ireland.
