A group of Ardoyne residents made their way to Dublin today (Thursday) to meet with President Mary McAleese in one of her last official engagements with visitors from the North.

Members of the Ardoyne Sports Group and Ardoyne Association travelled to Áras an Uachtaráin to meet with the President who will step down at the end of this month.

Mrs McAleese was born and bred in Ardoyne and throughout her presidency has continued to promote her strong links with the people of the area, making a number of visits to the district and welcoming local residents to her home in Phoenix Park.

Speaking from the bus en route to Dublin this morning local SDLP councillor for the area Nichola Mallon said the visitors were looking forward to meeting the President in her last few days in office.

“Everyone here is very excited and the atmosphere is great,” she said.

“It really is a historic visit because we are some of her last visitors from the North before her term is up so we are delighted and privileged to be going down to meet the President.”
