THE garden shed is not long for this world. The plastic windows have slipped from their weather-warped frames and the wind and the rain whip in through the unguarded six inches or so. Not that that’s the main means of ingress for the elements – the felt on the roof is slowly disintegrating and the boards underneath are gappy and sagging.
A century on, tide of change is irresistible
A decision at last week’s top committee at City Hall means we are moving inexorably to a place where Belfast City Council will be compliant with the law by removing the union flag from the Dome. There should be two flags, no flags or a civic flag flying from City Hall, but sadly only one flag has dominated the skyline in the century-plus since that imposing building went up in 1906.
Can Ireland top the Euro charts?
YES, folks, it’s that time of year again. The 57th Eurovision Song Contest will be staged in Azerbaijan this weekend and the, ah, most talented twins in Ireland – Jedward – will be representing us for the second year in a row.
Marian must be released now
RENEWED calls for the immediate release of West Belfast republican Marian Price have been made after local parties met with the Secretary of State and the Minister for Justice this week. A Sinn Féin delegation, including West Belfast MLA Jennifer McCann, met with Justice Minister David Ford on Monday when they called Ms Price’s continued imprisonment “an affront to natural justice”.
Paterson must act
SDLP leader Alasdair McDonnell is one hundred per cent right in his protestations to Secretary of State Owen Paterson in regard to the cases of Marian Price and Gerry McGeough. Those who suggest that because the SDLP man is diametrically opposed to the politics of both Ms Price and Mr McGeough he shouldn’t demand they be treated fairly don’t understand the very concept of justice being blind.
Speak with one voice
On Sunday, May 27 a march will take place on the Falls Road highlighting the continuing and unjust imprisonment of veteran republican Marian Price. The outcome of this march should not be dictated by those who have chosen to turn a blind eye, but rather by those who believe what is happening to Marian is totally wrong and therefore feel compelled to come out of their homes in support of her plight.
