Appeal over killing of boy

The family of a teenager gunned down by the British Army in the early years of the Troubles are appealing for witnesses to the killing to come forward. Gerard Gibson was shot in the head in Carrigart Avenue in Lenadoon on July 11, 1972. His family are hoping the investigation into the 16-year-old’s murder will be reopened and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

Environment body to probe oil-dumping at river claims

THE Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) is investigating claims that up to 20 metal drums filled with oily waste were illegally buried beside a river in a wildlife habitat on the outskirts of West Belfast. Two local walkers witnessed the 50 gallon drums being dumped in Glenside Community Woodlands and reported the incident to the Belfast Hills Partnership who manage the beauty spot.

Waking the dead at the Bass brewery

CROWDS have been flocking to the Falls Park this week to visit a wake house – with a difference. The one-day event on Tuesday was entitled the Brewery’s Wake. Visitors were invited to step inside a recreated old Irish wake house to mark the memory of the Glen Road Bass brewery site as a way of keeping local memories alive of the famous West Belfast employer.

I always feel a bit queasy when watching these cool sex education classes on TV where the teacher puts a condom over his/her head. But I suppose it has that unwatchable/unmissable quality Bill Wolsey was looking for when he suggested putting a 19th century condom on an appropriately shaped 21st century prop and popping the lot in the front window of Zara.

Road named after Emma

THE Glen Road has been renamed in honour of one of the founders of Relatives for Justice (RFJ). A street sign bearing the name ‘Emma Groves Road’ has been erected outside RFJ’s brand new Glen Road base at the suggestion of the Falls Women’s Centre to mark the recent International Women’s Day
