A WEEK-LONG series of events to celebrate 50 years of Horn Drive has been announced.

An old photograph exhibition, a community social night, a football match and a family fun day are just some of the events taking place from August 19 to August 24.

Locals have been working hard on getting the events organised, as Anto Adams of Horn Drive Community Centre told the Andersonstown News.

“This has been three months in the planning,” he said.  “We organised a series of meetings for interested parties to come up with ideas on how they would like to celebrate 50 years. Community volunteers, neighbours, any interested parties, Belfast City Council members and elected politicians were all involved.”

While the schedule has been planned, there’s still work to be done and our readers are being asked to lend a helping hand.

“If locals can provide us with any old material such as photos, video recordings, stories, memories of days gone by, or any famous people who lived here, including, footballers, actors, singers or local celebrities, we would be most grateful.

“Photos are a major part of the exhibition, so please anybody out there, if they can leave them in Horn Drive Community Centre as soon as possible, we would be most grateful.

“If anyone out there who has any ideas for events they would like to see put on let us know and if anybody would like to sponsor any of the events, please contact me in Horn Drive Community Centre.”

Some of the photos already being prepared for the exhibit include images of the lower Lenadoon area being built, the old ‘Pig Factory’ and homes inhabited by the British Army.  The exhibit will run for two days while other events, including a senior citizens dinner, a mini-Olympics, a roller disco and a much anticipated match between a Doon Star select and an Oliver Plunkett select .
