With visitors expected to flock into West Belfast ahead of  of the annual Easter commemoration, the Andersonstown Commemoration Committee have announced several events for next week. On Easter Saturday a special republican exhibition will take place in the Andersonstown Social Club from noon to 6pm.

A wreath-laying ceremony will also take place at the memorial garden at the side of the club from 5pm and Sinn Féin Councillor Emma Groves will address those assembled.

And Chairperson of the Committee, Seán Lennon, is encouraging the community to attend a wreath-laying ceremony on Easter Sunday.

“Wreaths will be placed at B Company, A Company, E Company and at the Kieran Doherty monument. This ceremony will take place at 11am,” he said.

“We are currently working on an initiative that is being planned to develop a fund to maintain the commemorative gardens, murals and plaques which we have created in the greater Andersonstown area in memory of our fallen volunteers, activists and supporters.

“We are working to develop a fund to ensure we can continue to maintain our monuments as the important places they are.

“With relatively small amounts of money it will be possible to keep them neat, secure and clean as the environment changes around them.

“A committee has been set up to oversee the establishment of this maintenance fund, and we are keen to hear from anyone who would be interested in contributing towards the up keep of the gardens,” Seán added.
