GROWING up in Derry, you tend to take having a county like Donegal on your doorstep for granted. Day trips to beach-side towns like Buncrana, Greencastle and Moville in the Inishowen Peninsula were such a regular occurrence as a child that I never really appreciated the beauty and history of Donegal like tourists from further afield would.
Anniversary marked at Connolly home
The 96th anniversary of Irish revolutionary James Connolly’s execution will be commemorated at an event at his former Falls Road home this weekend. On Saturday, members of the James Connolly Society will gather at the house where the 1916 patriot lived during his stay in Belfast.
CIRA MURDER SUSPECT SLASHES MAN IN BAR
One of the chief suspects in the double murder of two men in Belfast five years ago has slashed a County Louth businessman in a bar in Dundalk. The man, from the Ardoyne area of North Belfast, fled to Dundalk following the double murder of Belfast men Eddie Burns and Joe Jones in Belfast on March 12 2007.
Olympic torch passes along the Falls
The Olympic torch was in West Belfast this week. The Sports Council selected St Dominic’s Grammar School for Girls as the venue to welcome the torch to this part of the city. The torch arrived at St Dominic’s on Tuesday morning to proceed through a guard of honour before representatives from the Sports Council addressed staff, pupils and invited guests.
House price falls severest in North
House prices in North Belfast have seen some of the most dramatic falls of any region of the North since the economic crisis took hold in 2007, a leading housing expert has said. Tom McClelland, housing spokesman with the Royal Institute of Charterd Surveyors, was speaking after the publication the Institute’s latest house price survey this week.
